Morning Star & Evening Star

Three-candle patterns that mark major turning points

The Three-Act Reversal Story

The morning star and evening star are three-candle patterns that tell a complete story of sentiment shifting from one side to the other. A morning star forms at the bottom of a downtrend. Act 1: a large bearish (red) candle confirms the downtrend is in full control. Act 2: a small-bodied candle or doji that gaps down — this is the "star" — showing that selling pressure is drying up and neither side is dominant. Act 3: a large bullish (green) candle that closes deep into the body of the first candle, confirming that bulls have taken control. The evening star is the mirror image at the top of an uptrend: large bullish candle, then a gap-up star showing buyer exhaustion, then a large bearish candle closing deep into the first candle's body. The deeper the third candle closes into the first candle (ideally more than 50%), the stronger the signal.

3 things to know

🌅

Morning star: 3-candle bullish reversal — bearish candle + small star + strong bullish candle

🌆

Evening star: 3-candle bearish reversal — bullish candle + small star + strong bearish candle

📏

Third candle closing more than 50% into the first candle confirms a high-quality signal

Dive Deeper

Morning Star: Act by Act

Act 1 — The Bearish Candle

A large red candle closes near its low, confirming bears are in full control and the downtrend is strong.

Act 2 — The Star (Indecision)

A small-bodied candle forms, often with a gap down from the prior close. Selling pressure is exhausting — neither bulls nor bears control price.

Act 3 — The Bullish Reversal

A large green candle closes deep into the first candle's body (ideally 50%+). Bulls have decisively taken control, confirming the trend reversal.

Practice

Trading the Morning Star

1

Identify the Downtrend

The pattern only has meaning after an established downtrend. Look for a series of lower highs and lower lows before the pattern forms.

2

Spot the Three Candles

Confirm: large red candle, then a small-bodied star candle (preferably gapping lower), then a large green candle closing into the first candle.

3

Measure Penetration Depth

The third candle should close at least 50% into the first candle's body. More penetration = stronger reversal signal and higher success rate.

4

Set Entry and Stop

Enter on the close of the third candle or the open of the next session. Place your stop below the low of the star candle (the middle candle).

"The morning star pattern is one of the few candlestick formations that has statistically validated bullish reversal rates above 70% when confirmed with volume." — Thomas Bulkowski, Encyclopedia of Candlestick Charts
