Building Your Playbook

Your personal catalog of setups is the most valuable document you will ever create

What a Trading Playbook Is and How to Build One

A trading playbook is your personal catalog of the specific setups you trade — documented in enough detail that you could hand it to someone else and they could execute your strategy. Every professional trader has one. It is built from experience: every time you identify a setup that worked well (or failed in an instructive way), you document it. A setup entry in your playbook contains: (1) Setup name — give it a memorable label like "Opening Range Breakout" or "ABCD Pattern Reversal." (2) Market conditions required — what sector context, time of day, and overall market environment favor this setup. (3) Exact entry trigger — the specific price action signal that causes you to enter. (4) Stop placement rule — where the stop goes and why. (5) Target rule — how you determine the profit target. (6) Historical performance — your personal win rate, average R, and number of occurrences. Over time, your playbook becomes a living document of your edge. You will discover that 2–3 setups in your playbook produce 80% of your profits. You will ruthlessly focus on those and stop trading the weak ones.

3 things to know

📖

A playbook documents your setups in enough detail to execute them mechanically — removing guesswork from live trading.

🔬

Most traders find 2–3 setups produce 80% of their profits — the playbook reveals which ones.

📝

Each setup entry needs: name, conditions, entry trigger, stop rule, target rule, and your personal statistics.

How to Build Your Playbook From Scratch

1

Start With One Setup

Pick the single setup you have studied the most — likely the Opening Range Breakout or ABCD pattern. Document it fully using the template. One complete entry beats ten incomplete ones.

2

Paper Trade It 20 Times

Trade only that setup in paper trading for the next 20 occurrences. Log every result. After 20 trades you have statistically meaningful data on your edge in that setup.

3

Add Screenshots and Notes

For each trade, save a screenshot of the chart at entry and at exit. Annotate what the setup looked like. These examples become your visual reference library.

4

Review and Refine Monthly

Every month, re-examine each playbook entry. Is win rate improving? Which time-of-day performs best? Delete setups with negative expectancy. Double down on winners.

Did you know?

Top-ranked trading educator Mike Bellafiore of SMB Capital wrote an entire book called "The PlayBook" based on the principle that each trader must develop their own unique playbook of setups. At his firm, new traders are not considered ready for full capital allocation until they can articulate at least three well-documented setups from their own experience.
