The Night Before
Your edge is built when the market is closed.
The Night-Before Ritual
Every elite momentum trader has a night-before ritual that separates consistent performers from reactive gamblers. The market opens at 9:30 AM, but your edge — or lack of it — is determined the evening before. Professional traders treat the night before like an athlete treats the night before a game: review performance, study the opponent, and prepare mentally and tactically. Skipping night-before prep means arriving at the open reactive, emotional, and underprepared. You'll chase stocks you haven't studied, miss the setups you would have found, and trade with undefined risk. Contrast that with a trader who enters the session with 2-3 stocks fully researched, entry triggers defined, stops placed, and position sizes calculated. The night-before routine takes 60-90 minutes. It is the highest-return-per-hour activity a trader can do. Most professional traders spend more time preparing the night before than they spend actively trading the next day — and that's exactly why they win.
3 things to know
Elite traders spend 60-90 minutes on night-before prep — often more time than they trade.
Having a written watchlist with levels reduces emotional decision-making at the open.
Traders with defined plans before the open execute faster and hold winners longer.

The Night-Before Ritual (5 Stages)
5:00 PM — Review Trades
Go through every trade from the day. Note what worked, what didn't, and what emotions affected decisions. No blame — just data.
6:00 PM — Earnings Calendar
Check tomorrow's pre-market and after-hours earnings reports. Identify any tickers that might gap significantly and appear on your scanner.
7:00 PM — FDA & News Dates
Scan the FDA calendar for PDUFA dates, clinical trial readouts, and drug approval decisions. These create the most explosive overnight gaps.
8:00 PM — Macro Events
Note any FOMC decisions, CPI reports, or Fed speeches scheduled for tomorrow. Macro events can override any individual stock setup.
9:00 PM — Set Alerts & Rest
Pre-set any known levels in your charting platform, confirm your broker platform is functioning, and go to sleep. A rested mind makes better split-second decisions.

4 Steps to Close Out the Trading Day
Clear P&L Emotions
Whether today was green or red, close the emotional ledger. Tomorrow is a new session with fresh opportunities. Carrying yesterday's emotions into tomorrow is a losing strategy.
Write 2-3 Watchlist Ideas
Based on earnings, FDA events, or sector trends, jot down 2-3 tickers you'd like to watch tomorrow. These are candidates — not commitments.
Confirm Risk Budget
Decide your maximum loss for tomorrow before the session starts. Write it down. If you hit that number, you stop trading — no exceptions.
Check Broker & Platform
Ensure your broker platform, data feeds, and charting software are fully functional. A technical issue discovered at 9:29 AM is a disaster. Discovering it at 9 PM is a minor inconvenience.
Did you know?
Most professional traders spend more time preparing the night before than actively trading the next day. A 90-minute preparation session for a 30-minute active trading window is a completely normal ratio among consistently profitable momentum traders.
