Finding the Best Movers Before the Bell
A gapper is any stock trading significantly higher or lower than its prior closing price in pre-market trading. The pre-market gappers list is the first tool a momentum trader opens every morning — it's the menu of potential opportunities for the day. But not all gappers are created equal. A stock gapping 8% on 12,000 shares of pre-market volume is very different from one gapping 8% on 1.2 million shares. Volume confirms that real money — not just a handful of retail traders — is moving the stock. Without volume, gaps have no momentum behind them. The filtering process is critical. Start by sorting all pre-market movers by percentage gain. Then apply volume filters (minimum 100K pre-market shares is a common threshold) and float filters (under 20M shares outstanding creates explosive moves). Finally, confirm the catalyst. A name that passes all three filters — big % move, real volume, small float, verified catalyst — earns a spot on your shortlist. You want 2-3 names on your final watchlist, not 20.

Pre-market gappers with >100K shares of volume before 8 AM are 3x more likely to follow through at the open than low-volume gappers.
Filtering to float <20M and pre-market volume >100K typically reduces a list of 200 gappers down to 3-5 actionable setups.
The gap percentage matters less than the catalyst quality — a 10% gap on an FDA approval beats a 30% gap on a vague press release.

Pull all pre-market movers sorted by percentage gain. Your scanner should show tickers, % move, pre-market volume, and last price at minimum.
Filter Float & Volume
Apply float <20M shares and pre-market volume >100K shares. This immediately eliminates 90% of the list, leaving only high-conviction setups.
Find the Catalyst
For each remaining ticker, identify the exact catalyst. FDA news, earnings beat, acquisition, short squeeze — the catalyst must be concrete and verifiable.
Shortlist Top 2
Select your top 2 names for the watchlist — the ones with the best combination of catalyst quality, float, and volume. These get full research before 9:30 AM.
