Section 5 · Pre-Market Prep
The Complete Pre-Market Checklist
Routines outperform inspiration every time.
The System That Produces Consistent Preparation
Everything covered in Section 5 — futures, global markets, news triage, gapper scanning, catalyst evaluation, float checks, short interest, watchlist building, alerts, Level 2, sector momentum, VIX, options flow, and the 9:20 scan — comes together in a single systematic routine that elite traders execute every single morning. The power of a routine is not that it guarantees winning trades. It's that it guarantees consistent preparation regardless of your mood, the prior day's results, or external distractions. A trader who lost $2,000 yesterday and a trader who made $3,000 yesterday both sit down at 7 AM and execute the same routine. The routine neutralizes emotional variance. This complete pre-market checklist takes approximately 60-90 minutes for a trader who has developed fluency with each step. For beginners, allow 2+ hours. The goal is to arrive at 9:29 AM with everything done: watchlist built, plans written, alerts set, risk confirmed, and mind clear. When the opening bell rings, your only job is execution — not thinking, not researching, not deciding. The morning routine IS the trade. Everything after the bell is just the outcome.
3 things to know
The complete pre-market routine takes 60-90 minutes for experienced traders — beginning at 7-7:30 AM and finishing by 9:20 AM.
Written routines outperform mental routines by a measurable margin — the act of checking items off prevents the "I already know this" shortcut that causes skipped steps.
Consistency in pre-market preparation is the single most cited differentiator between profitable and unprofitable traders in every trader survey ever published.

The Complete Pre-Market Timeline
Night Before — Review & Calendar
Review trades from the day. Check earnings calendar, FDA events, and macro scheduled releases for tomorrow. Write 2-3 preliminary watchlist ideas. Set risk budget.
7:00–8:00 AM — Futures & Global Markets
Check /ES, /NQ, /YM futures. Review Nikkei, DAX, and FTSE closes. Note overall risk-on vs. risk-off tone. Check VIX level and opening implied move for S&P 500.
8:00–8:30 AM — News Scan
Triage all pre-market news. Identify high-impact catalysts (FDA, earnings, acquisitions). Discard noise items. Note any macro data releases (CPI, jobs report) scheduled for today.
8:30–9:00 AM — Gappers Scan
Pull all pre-market movers sorted by % gain. Filter by volume >100K and float <20M. Confirm catalyst for each remaining name. Identify your top 3 candidates.
9:00–9:15 AM — Build Watchlist
Select final 2 primary stocks and 3 bench stocks. For primaries: write entry trigger, stop-loss level, price target, and position size in shares. Check short interest and options flow.
9:15–9:20 AM — Set Alerts
Configure entry, stop, and target alerts in broker and charting platform. Set audio alerts for maximum notice. Check Level 2 for any large order walls near breakout levels.
9:20–9:29 AM — Final Scan
Run the 9:20 checklist on each watchlist name. Remove any that have deteriorated. Confirm futures and sector alignment. Close all non-trading applications. Mental preparation: breathe, focus, execute.
