Your First Trade of the Day

Take the A-setup or take nothing

Take the A-setup or take nothing.

Your first trade of the day sets the mental state for your entire session. A winning first trade creates confidence and patience. A losing first trade — especially if it was a B or C setup — creates a hole to dig out of and often triggers revenge trading. The rule is simple: if an A-grade setup does not appear by 10 AM — catalyst, float, technical trigger, volume all aligned — take no trade. Zero trades is a legitimate and often profitable decision.

3 things to know

🧠

The quality of your first trade has an outsized psychological effect on all subsequent trading decisions for the rest of the day.

If no A-setup appears by 10 AM, the best setups have likely already occurred. Close the platform and protect your capital.

🏆

Professional traders take zero trades on 20–30% of trading days. Selectivity is a core skill, not a weakness.

Scenario

It is 9:55 AM. You have not taken a trade yet. MORN had an A-setup at 9:32 but ran without you. HYMC is moving fast but you did no pre-market research on it. What is the right move?

💡

Did you know?

FOMO trades placed outside defined setup criteria lose at a 3:1 ratio versus planned trades and account for a disproportionate share of daily max-loss days.
